In recent years the major problem in functioning of the railway traffic has been the lack of electric and diesel multiple units, significant technical obsoleteness, high costs of operation and maintenance and low percentage of availability. If Serbian Railways want to increase the share of railways in the modal shift, due to the strong competition on the transport services market in passenger transport, they need to improve the transport services quality through better organization of the passenger transport and procurement of better quality and up-to-date rolling stock. In order to improve the quality and cost efficiency of transport services, Serbian Railways are generally oriented towards usage of multiple unit sets (EMUs and DMUs) in organization of regional and local traffi c. Also, City of Belgrade plans procurement of EMUs for commuter operation. The paper shows certain problems in operation of electric and diesel multiple units series: ŽS 412/416, BR 481, MAV 5342, DB 403 (ICE3), DB 411 (ICE-T), MAV 6341. For the maintenance of electric and diesel multiple-unit sets it would be necessary to perform a detailed analysis which would offer adequate solutions in accordance with the planned capacities for both the new sets and the existing ones, operating in urban and suburban and regional service on the Serbian railway network.
