Residential buildings in Algeria are responsible
for 41% of total country’s energy consumption. In this study, a hoiistic
approach has been adopted to anaiyze the buiiding stock of a middie-sized city
(Mouzaia) in Aigeria according to their energy consumption. The purpose of this
paper is to test the pertinence of the urban isiand scaie as an energy
assessment tooi. This study is based on a statistical approach of the isiands’
typoiogies to singie out a modei abie to estimate the energy ioad of a simpie
dweiiing or for an island according to a set of indicators. Thus, Urban isiands
were ciustered according to their geometricai and physicai attributes that
considers a iarge panei of indicators such as isiand’s area, buiit-up area,
compactness, porosity, iand use, areai density, buiit density, soiar ad-
mittance and the passive voiume. The conciusion of this anaiysis shows the
ciassification profiies of the buiiding stock of Mouzaia according to their
energy consumption with an accuracy ievei of 86%. Aiso, this modei deveioped
can be impiemented to a GIS tooi in order to identify within a iarge scaie the
different scenarios which couid be adopted to reduce the energy ioad of dwelings.
