WIDENing OF STEEL TUBES AS A METHOD OF APSORPTION OF THE KINETIC ENERGY IN RAILWAY VEHICLE COLLISION
Abstract
One type of collision energy absorption element is considered, which works on principle of the tube widening. During plastic deformation of the steel tubes, by widening to a larger diameter by means of special cone thorn, absorbed energy will be greater then by absorber which works on principle of tube smashing. Between inner tube side and thorn a considerable friction appears, which increases widening resistance and therefore increases absorbed energy. By preliminary calculations it was got the widening ratio and dimensions of the absorption pair for application in railway vehicle applications (the tube element and the thorn). The correspondent test results are given and compared to two other energy absorption element types.
